Short Inca Trail — Complete Day by Day Itinerary
The Short Inca Trail itinerary is carefully designed to maximize your time on the original Inca path while giving you a full guided visit inside Machu Picchu on Day 2. Furthermore, every stop along the route has been selected for its historical significance, natural beauty, and photographic value. Therefore, here is exactly what to expect on each day of your Short Inca Trail adventure from Cusco.
Day 1 — Cusco → Kilometer 104 → Wiñayhuayna → Sun Gate → Aguas Calientes
We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 AM and travel by private vehicle to Ollantaytambo, where we board the tourist train to Kilometer 104 — the official starting point of the Short Inca Trail. Here your guide will introduce you to the archaeological group of Chachabamba at 2,270 meters above sea level, explaining its function as a ceremonial gateway to the Inca Trail network. Furthermore, after approximately 2 hours of uphill ascent through cloud forest, we reach Wiñayhuayna at 2,650 meters — the most important and impressive archaeological site on the entire Short Inca Trail, featuring terraced temples, water fountains, and ceremonial baths carved directly into the mountainside. Therefore, plan to spend time here with your guide learning about its history and significance before continuing. In addition, we continue along the original Inca stone path to Inti Punku — the Sun Gate — arriving in time to witness the famous sunset view over Machu Picchu from above. We then descend to Aguas Calientes for dinner and overnight in a comfortable hostel.
Total trekking time: approximately 6 hours. Box lunch included.
Day 2 — Aguas Calientes → Machu Picchu → Cusco
We wake up early and after breakfast at approximately 5:30 AM, we head toward the Machu Picchu sanctuary. Furthermore, we begin our uphill walk at around 6:00 AM to reach the Inca citadel and be among the very first visitors of the day — experiencing the magical early morning atmosphere before the main crowds arrive. Therefore, your certified guide leads a comprehensive 2-hour guided tour of the most important temples, palaces, and ceremonial areas within Machu Picchu at 2,400 meters above sea level. In addition, after the guided visit you have free time to explore the citadel independently and take photographs. Optional hikes to Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu Mountain are available for an additional cost of $70 USD per person. At the appropriate time, we take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, board the tourist train back to Ollantaytambo, and transfer by bus to Cusco, arriving at approximately 9:30 PM.
Wiñayhuayna — The Hidden Gem of the Short Inca Trail
Wiñayhuayna is without doubt the highlight of the Short Inca Trail and one of the most impressive yet least-visited archaeological sites in the entire Cusco region. Furthermore, its name means “forever young” in Quechua — the language of the Incas — and reflects the extraordinary state of preservation of its terraces, temples, and ceremonial fountains. Therefore, unlike the main Machu Picchu citadel which receives over 1.5 million visitors per year, Wiñayhuayna sees a fraction of that number, giving you a genuinely intimate encounter with Inca architecture in a cloud forest setting. In addition, the site sits at 2,650 meters above sea level and offers spectacular views of the Urubamba canyon below. Wiñayhuayna — recognized within the Machu Picchu UNESCO World Heritage Site
What to Pack for the Short Inca Trail
Packing correctly for the Short Inca Trail makes a significant difference to your comfort and enjoyment on both days. Furthermore, the route passes through the cloud forest where temperatures can change rapidly — mornings are cool and afternoons can bring rain at any time of year. Therefore, the key is to pack light but smart, prioritizing layers and waterproof gear over heavy equipment. In addition, remember that all personal luggage must be carried by you throughout the entire trek since porter services are not included in the standard package.

Short Inca Trail vs Classic Inca Trail — Which Should You Choose?
One of the most common questions we receive is how the Short Inca Trail compares to the classic 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Furthermore, both routes use sections of the original Inca road network and both finish with the iconic Sun Gate arrival at Machu Picchu. Therefore, the right choice depends entirely on your available time, fitness level, and budget. In addition, understanding the key differences helps you make the decision that best fits your overall travel plans in Peru.
Short Inca Trail — Key Advantages
The Short Inca Trail offers several significant advantages over the classic route. Furthermore, it requires only 2 days instead of 4, making it the ideal option for travelers with a tight itinerary or limited time in Cusco. Therefore, you still experience the authentic Inca road, the cloud forest, Wiñayhuayna, and the legendary Sun Gate arrival — all the most memorable elements of the classic trail — but in a fraction of the time. In addition, permits for the Short Inca Trail are easier to obtain than classic trail permits, which sell out up to 6 months in advance during peak season. However, we still recommend booking your Short Inca Trail at least 3 to 4 weeks ahead to guarantee your preferred date. compare all our trekking routes to Machu Picchu
Classic Inca Trail — When It Makes More Sense
The classic 4-day Inca Trail is the better choice if you have more time and want the full multi-day trekking experience. Furthermore, the classic route covers approximately 43 kilometers and includes multiple archaeological sites, diverse ecosystems, and two nights of camping under the Andean stars. Therefore, if immersive trekking and overnight camping are central to your Peru plans, the classic trail delivers a richer overall adventure. However, if time is your main constraint, the Short Inca Trail gives you the most important highlights without the 4-day commitment. view the classic Inca Trail 4-day itinerary
